35th INTIMA Council Camp

Venue : Awana Genting
Date : 25-27 February 2011

Why do we go to schools, colleges, universities or learning institutions? Is it to study and get good results? Learn a trade? Meet people? My ex-principal once said, “Boys, you come to school to learn how to be human. We don’t want students who just know how to solve difficult problems, or know every formula in the text book, for then you’ll just be robots, processing what we feed you. No, you come to school to learn how to be humans.” By being humans he meant honing the social and personality aspect of a person, making them humans that are not socially awkward. The 35th INTIMA Council Camp did just that.

When I first stepped on that bus that was to take us to the camp venue, Awana Genting, I only knew about a handful of people on that bus. Everybody was still sticking to their comfort zones, not mingling around much. However, as soon as we reached Awana Genting and were separated into groups, it began, 3 days and 2 nights of laughter, joy and mindless fun.

The participants were separated into 6 groups, with 2 groups sharing a villa. Well I can’t speak for the other villas, but the people in my villa, crazy! After a round of what’s your name, programme and crap, it was like we knew each other for years. We were singing together, sharing dumb stories, and poking fun at each other. Talk about super glue bonding!!

Soon we were called out for some games the INTIMA committee had prepared for us. So we all headed out to the field for a game of Pass the Poison Parcel. Basically the game involved us passing a big paper ball to the music. When the music stopped the person holding it at the time had to tear out the top layer where there will be either a task (usually humiliating) or a reward (probably something they bought at the dollar store XD). Some of the tasks were, Dance like Michael Jackson, Propose to a guy/girl, Act like a bodybuilder and Act like Justin Bieber(Oh the HORROR!) The other game they prepared didn’t actually have a name, but involved a lot of running, chasing ALEX TAN, more running and tackling random guys.

Being a low budget camp, the INTIMA council cooked for us. So for the 1st night we had spaghetti which tasted strangely like porridge. After dinner, each team was told to come up with a team name, cheer and performances. My team choose the name Neon Beams due to the yellow neon lanyards that we had. Then after a lot of brainstorming and nonsense talking, we finally came up with a yell at 12.30am. What happened next was phenomenal. Imagine a bunch a people suddenly storming into your room in the middle of the night and shouting some incomprehensible gibberish straight to your face, for that was exactly what we did. Epic times.

The next day was filled with activities. The day started off with a serving of a very flavorful Maggie mee by the committees. We then proceeded to First World Hotel and Resort by cable car for a game of Genting Bingo. Basically we were handed a piece of paper with 9 pictures on it and had to find each one of them. Simple enough except that halfway through the game we were told that “A new challenge had arrived!” We now also had to find Mr. Asnol and Aaron from INTIMA who were hidden somewhere in the wide expanse of First World. It was then that our evil minds started to work and we hatched a devious plan to lure Mr. Asnol and Aaron out. Well after a lot of phone calls, gunfights and a few hostages later, we managed to get Mr. Asnol to meet us at McD. Sadly we were told that the other teams had already beaten us to it and we were one of the last to find him. So much for our great plan….. L After lunch at the restaurants around there we headed back to Awana Genting to prepare for the group performances and barbeque later.

The group performances were very entertaining. All the groups did something musically based, which songs involved throwing teams off mountains, catching grenades, jumping in front of trains and low hanging boobs??

After a round of laughter we started the barbeque. The barbeque produced it’s fill of smoke, fire and carbonated sausages. Overall we had fun time barbequing fishballs, sausages and wings. At one point there were so much leftover fishballs that someone actually suggested that we spray the balls white and dump them at the golf course.

The night then passed with a lot of talking, singing and dancing. There was this time when the song “Tong Hua” came up on the mp3 and everybody in the room suddenly started to sing along! Wow!

All good things have to come to and end and soon it was time to start packing and leave. Overall it was a wonderful camp, I made a lot of new friends and bonded really well with them. As one of my roommates said, “We came as strangers and now we’re leaving as family”. This year’s INTIMA camp really met it’s mark of bringing the members of the various clubs of INTI together. Kudos to the committees for a job well done. I will always remember this camp.

Sunset

After 3 to 4 days of rain and gloomy weather, finally the sun is up.
Since it is up, it must also go down. Here are some pictures I took of the sunset from the Malacca Jetty.

Rainy Days

Puddle, puddle everywhere...
Recently it has not stopped raining. Malacca and the rest of east Malaysia has been hit by downpours that are not supposed to be there and with it a lot of water. It's gonna be a damp CNY this year.

On days like this, all you want to get on a lazy chair or bed, and sleep....z Z Z Z

Whoa! It's 2011 already?

Was I that immersed in gaming and slacking that I was ignorant of the change of years? Although I do remember going to Jonker's on a Friday night and counting down to something while watching drunken people dancing on tables...

Like the title suggests, it's 2011 already. In just a snap of a finger, 2010 has passed and with it a year's worth of memories.

Last year was a big year for me. It was the year when I officially graduated from secondary school boy to college nerd. Now as I think back upon all what happened for the past few month, I'm gripped by a sudden urge to write about the events that have made a great impact on me and also about the other things that made 2010 such a wonderful year. Starting with...

College

I attended 2 colleges last year. Fourseas Bible College, Singapore and Inti College, Subang. Starting with Fourseas Bible College, I would say that those 6 weeks that I spent in Singapore was one of the highlights of the year. Singapore blew my mind away. Everything about it, the infrastructure, the cleanliness, the people, the education system, the non-hawker food, amazing! It was during those 6 weeks that I decided that I would do all that was in my power to get a place at NUS or NTU. Other than that, studying at Fourseas opened my eyes and further enriched my knowledge of the Bible. Without Fourseas I would never have known about the anthropological argument or the cosmological argument or have a clearer understanding of Pre-Millennialism. Furthermore the fellowship that we had with the brethren there, priceless. I would never forget that time when we went cycling at ECP or all those trips we had from The church building to the Lakeside MRT station or the lectures, lecturers and students at Fourseas. The Fourseas Singapore Experience was truly one that I'll always keep close to my heart.

Inti College. I enrolled myself at Inti Subang for the July Cambrige A-Level intake and have studied there since. A-Levels came with its share of stress, laughter, dissapointments and achievements. Throughtout the 6 months that I have studies, I have made plenty of new friends, all unique in their own ways. Friends who have made an impact on my life. I was blessed with the opportunity to be part of the craziest class of the July A-lvl intake, JUS 1. As a class that never had a dull moment, we just charged through those 6 months with laughter, joy and a perpetual sugar rush. As I think back, I'm filled with fond memories of the time after our Chemistry presentation, Halloween Night, The Bill Clinton Talk, the Scholarship Awards Ceremony and the events that took place after our final semester exams. Now as we step into a new semester, I hope that this sem will continue to be as awesome.

Friends

It's moments like these that I'll always keep in my heart

What I was up to these past few days

Friday, 10th December 2010

The day exams ended. Went to Yuen steamboat to eat. This marked to start of the eating spree.

Saturday, 11th December 2010

Went to the KL Motor Show and saw beautiful cars and girls.
Took the 6.30pm bus back to Malacca.
Joined my primary schoolmates and form teacher, Ms. Lee in karaoke. Missed the steamboat dinner where most of primary schoolmates attended. Aww Shucks!

Sunday, 12th December

My friends from Subang came down for a trip to Malacca. 10 of them came in total. 1st thing to do was to bring them for Chicken Rice Balls! Then for dinner we had Pak Putra's naan. After that we left for Jonker Street for the weekend flea market. Spent at least 2 and a half hours shopping and posing there.

Monday, 13th December

Woke up at 11am. All of us did, so we had a baba nyonya brunch at The Peranakan House. Then we proceded to the Stadhuys for some more posing and exploring. I then took them to Dataran Pahlawan, where we split. Some went for a movie, whilst some shopped. For dinner, it was the famous Capitol Satay Celup. They all loved it! My table personally finished 116 sticks! After that some of us cycled to the nearby "beach" where various incidents happened. Sadly i cannot disclose what happen since i'm sworn to secrecy to a puppy. XD had supper at Restoran Asam Pedas TKL, where my friends realized exactly how cheap Malaccan food is...

Tuesday, 14th December

My friends left back for Subang on the 3pm bus. But not before they ate at the Wan Tan Mee store near my house. Not exactly the best WTM in town, but good all the same. The rest of the day passed like normal. Eating, sleeping, playing Transformers : War for Cybertron...

Wednesday, 15th December

Woke up at 12noon. AWESOME! Drank a cup of milo and got on my bike and rushed to DP where we me and Vincent was supposed to meet up with the SFI gang. Had lunch at US Pizza and the proceeded to watch The Social Network. Seriously, after that movie, logging on to Facebook never seemed the same again. After that, Goh wanted to try out the newly opened ChicKing, so we had our pre-dinner there. Err, nothing can be said about the quality of the food. It was decided that we go for satay celup for dinner. Since I alrd had satay celup, Vincent and I cycled under the rain back home where we had dinner. Then we drove to McQueks Satay Celup and join them again! After that it was jetty and pool!!!

The past few days have been intense!!! and this is just the warm up, its just gonna get better and better! WOOHOO!! IT"S GREAT TO BE HOME!!!

Tomorrow, its dim sum for breakfast! (If we wake up early), then Tron, then whatever else!! Oh yeah!

Let's Dance

A thousand mile journey begins with a single step. If you want something, fight for it. Just sitting down and lazying about is not going to get you anywhere. Have the confidence to take that first step, and you'll find that life is more worth the living after that.

Now,

The 1st step has been taken, the dice thrown, the stage set.

LET'S DANCE.

C) Of Gluttony and Chicken Wings

3 weeks overdue.

It was on the 30th of October at around 2pm that I received a sms from Kin Mun asking whether I would like to join some of them for dinner at Yuen Steamboat. I agreed. So at about 6 something i left to sunway pyramid where i was picked up by Donovan and headed to Yuen's. Yuen Steamboat is one of the more popular steamboat restaurants in Subang. With 3 floors and a wide array of food to choose from, its any food lovers dream. Not to forget the much sort after chicken wings, but more about that later.

It turned out that Jason had brought the whole matriculation gang together with their friends from Penang to Sunway for a holiday break, so we occupied 2 tables. We in our Franciscan spirit occupied one table while the other occupied the other. And thus the feast began.

As the minutes turned to hours, the number of plates increased steadily. Everyone let out their inner glutton on that day as we devourer plate after plate of seafood and meat. However the only drawback to steamboats is that we have to wait for the food to cook, which brings me to the topic of the chicken wings.

The chicken wings was the only ready-to-eat food available. So naturally it was in high demand. If you don't move fast, you don't eat. We then realised that if we wanted to get the wings we had to fight, to participate in the great Battle for the Chicken Wings. It was war.

5 things to do to win in the Battle for Chicken Wings
1) Keep track of the status of the tray containing the wings at all times.
2) When the lady takes the tray into the kitchen, you know that the time has come. Get ready.
3) Send a contender from your table, armed with plates and a tong.
4) Patiently wait for the tray(now filled with chicken wings) to arrive.
5) Use your tong to ward away enemy tongs while you use your plate to scoop up the chicken wings.

And you have just successfully participated in the Battle for Chicken Wings and emerged victorious!

We stayed on eating until 11pm until we finally left with a full tummy, content.

B) A Night of Horrors and Wonders

Life can take us by surprise in many different ways. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it shocking and sometimes it's just downright nasty. However, there are times when the unexpected happens, when all three types of surprises happen together in rapid succession. Now this phenomenon is very rare and can only happen if all the pieces align themselves on a particular day. And that day was 27 October 2010.

Now before we can talk about that day, we have to understand and know the pieces that were involved in the alignment. Let's rewind to about a month and a half before 27 October 2010.

It was a hot, sweaty afternoon. A group of men and women were waiting in a classroom on the 8th floor of the Inti Tower. Each one of them, men or women alike dressed to kill. The sound of satin ties against cotton shirts and the tap of heels against the floor signified one thing : These people were here for a purpose, a mission. A mission to prove themselves worthy to be called "The Committee". Even though the air-con was on full blast on that day, the tension in the atmosphere made it seem that we were all standing under the hot sun outside. Each one of them resorting to their own ways to calm the storm of anxiety quelling in them. Finally it was time. One by one they entered the Chamber of Trials to be tested. What happened after that shall remain a mystery. We have no idea what happened in that Chamber, all we know is that 1 week after it was over, 20 of us were summoned. Summoned to become "The Committee".

Ever since then The Committee have worked on several projects. Projects that demanded our full attention and energy. And one of those projects was "Halloween Night".

Planning for Halloween Night came under the administration of the Drama and Musical Division of The Committee. With Eugene Tan and Tracy Wong as the leaders of the division, a task force was formed. A task force dedicated to make sure that the event was carried out with perfection. A group of people tasked with making the pieces and finally aligning them.

As the day for the event approached, each piece was slowly beginning to take form. Like all projects, some pieces began to fall apart, some pieces taking to long to complete. However, we pushed on, overcoming every obstacle, all to ensure the prefect alignment of each piece on that day.

Finally the day came. 27 October 2010. The Night of Horrors and Wonders. Halloween Night 2010. The time had come to finally align the pieces and see the whole picture. And the end result...

WAS AWESOME!!!!!

All the pieces fitted perfectly! The emcees, the performances, the DJs, THE DRAMA, the background music, the costumes, The Joker, the blood, the sword, the fake hand, the pumpkins, the worms and crickets... PERFECT FIT!

Everyone had a pleasant surprise watching the well synchronized and directed drama, got shocked by the amazing acting skills and make up our actors had, and finally nastily surprised by all the disgusting costumes that the students came in. (especially that gay mask that Avinash wore... and not to mention a sword XD) Jason even came as The Joker! And he looked just like the original Joker! How cool is that?

That Night was really a night to remember.  Kudos to all the committee members who worked so hard to make all the pieces fit! You all rock!
